NATO, General Allen in charge of European forces

NATO appointed U.S. General John Allen as the new supreme commander of coalition forces in Europe.

He will be replaced by his current duties as commander of international forces in Afghanistan by Joseph Dunford, currently deputy general of the Marines.

Gen. Allen led coalition troops in Afghanistan since July 2011, having under its control 68 U.S. troops and other troops of the 28 NATO members and 22 other coalition partners.

He was President Obama announced the appointment of Allen in Europe. It is expected that his appointment three approved by the Senate in the coming months, making general officially begin his duties at the beginning of next year.

Before directing operations against the Taliban, Allen held an important job in the Iraqi insurgency in 2006-08.
